Hi Reader, This painting is older than my 4 year old. She's also WAY bigger than her too and comes in at 40 by 59 inches. I'd like to introduce you to Maud: (Video not working? Try this link instead.) Maud Wagner, born in 1877 in Kansas, USA, began her adventurous career performing in circuses at a young age. Her life took a bold turn when she decided to learn the art of tattooing. Enter Gus Wagner: he wanted a date, she wanted tattoo lessons. They struck a deal, leading to a marriage and a unique partnership. Together, they toured the United States, introducing the art of tattooing to people nationwide. Their daughter eventually joined the family business, but Maud had one condition: she must never get a tattoo herself. I have captured Maud’s legacy in an acrylic painting, adorned with 23k gold leaf and hand-embroidered tattoo elements. Maud inspired my series, Women Who Tattoo, which celebrates women defying gender norms. If you know any female tattoo artists, I’d love to celebrate them too! Please connect me with them. I envision this work displayed alongside portraits of contemporary female tattoo artists, celebrating those who forge their own paths and challenge societal norms. Thank you for your continued support and for being a part of this artistic journey. Your appreciation of my work means the world to me, and I am excited to share more stories and portraits with you. Feel free to reach out with any thoughts or connections to female tattoo artists you know. Let’s continue to celebrate the incredible women who inspire us all.

Carrie is a visual artist and art educator, and has had work displayed in short term exhibitions at The Smithsonian and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Her artist practice is about highlighting and addressing gender norms, perfectionism and being a primary caregiver. She is a new(ish) Mom to a strong, smart 4-year old, a furmom to a doodle that’s more muppet than dog, and currently lives in Houston, Texas after 13 years in the Middle East and Canada. When she’s not playing board games with her hubby, she’s baking, reading, and making her own art.

Hi Reader, I’m going to keep this short and sweet because it’s the last month of 2024 and you and I both have things to do to wrap up the year. For me, that means finding all of Santa's gifts, finding the room in my luggage to hide and transport said presents, and fly across the US to be with loved ones. For you, maybe it's chasing down end of year school to-dos or curling up on the couch and leaving on the Hallmark Channel (Cheesy holiday movies anyone? Anyone?) Anyway…today I just wanted to...
Hi Reader, I’m excited to unveil my latest piece, tentatively titled Ancestor's Promise. This 3-foot square drawing, rendered in colored pencil on watercolor paper, is both a personal and creative journey. Recently, I joined a group of local women artists for mutual support, and we’ve been working toward a group exhibition with the theme Roots. Although I had already begun this piece, I quickly realized how deeply it resonates with that theme. Colored pencil has long been a part of my...
